Bluesy Shari Puorto does a homecoming show at Stella Blues

Former Orange resident Shari Puorto will perform for family and friends and you, too, if you’d like, in New Haven Sunday night. contributed

By Mark Zaretsky, New Haven Register

POSTED: 11/13/14, 3:02 PM EST | UPDATED: 1 WEEK, 1 DAY AGO

NEW HAVEN >> Chances are you’ve never heard of Shari Puorto – and that makes sense, since she lives and has made her living singing the blues and leading a blues rock band for the past 12 years in the Los Angeles area.

She can sing the heck out the blues, punching things home with subtlety, power and passion, and truth be told, she grew up in Orange.

While Puorto occasionally has stopped by to sit in with local bands during visits back home, however – an unexpected and pleasant surprise when she did it with my band, The Cobalt Rhythm Kings, a few years back – she’s never performed here in an advertised show of her own.

Until now.

Puorto will perform in her old stomping grounds, or near them, anyway, for the first time on Sunday in an early, 5 p.m. show at Stella Blues, 204 Crown St. Tickets are $7 in advance at www.BluesRockMusic.com or $10 at the door.

She’ll be joined by New York’s Andy Aledort & the Groove Kings and a couple of longtime friends, local native Jim Pino Jr. on saxophone and harmonica and Will “the Thrill” Hitchcock on keyboards.

“I’m coming home” to see “family and friends,” said Puorto, who lives these days in Hermosa Beach, Calif. “And I decided that I ‘ve never really performed in my hometown,” and it was time to change that, she said.

Puorto, who has worked with the likes of New York blues guitarist Jimmy Vivino and onetime Chicago (and later California) blues keyboard wunderkind Barry Goldberg on past albums, has been busy in recent weeks.

She opened for Kansas about a month ago and played a benefit in Santa Barbara, Calif., in which she shared the stage with Robben Ford, Joe Bonamassa, Vivino and Rick Robinson of the Black Crowes. Last year, she got to sing background vocals with Don Felder of the Eagles and share the stage with Slash, onetime lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses.

She also has shared the stage over the years with Tab Benoit, Tommy Castro, Dickey Betts, Johnny Winter, Dave Mason, Robin Trower, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Larry Carlton and Ike Turner, among others.

In between, she’s done plenty of club gigs, mostly in California but also in Colorado, among other places.

“I just keep plugging away,” Puorto said.

While she’s never played her own gig around here, Puorto has been pretty well-recognized where she lives, winning a 2010 Los Angeles Music Award for American, Blues, Roots Song of the Year for her song, “Free.” She also is a past winner of the Best Female Vocalist award in the Southbay Music Awards.

She is working on her fourth album, “My Obsession,” which she expects to be out in March of next year.

What’s she looking for most about coming home?

“Aside from having Pepe’s pizza? Just performing for my family and friends,” she said. “I’ve never really done it before – not in New Haven, Connecticut.”

Dec, 2013 - Jeff Moehlis: Musicians Band Together at Notes for Notes Benefit Concert

Big-name stars and a few surprises were all part of the act for Friday night's third annual event at the newly remodeled Loberto Theatre

What a way to christen the newly remodeled Lobero Theatre! On Friday night, at the third annual Notes for Notes Benefit Concert, an amazing group of announced and unannounced artists joined together to deliver a true Show for the Ages. In the process, a significant amount of money was raised for the Santa Barbara-based Notes for Notes organization, which is expanding into new locales with its admirable mission of providing musical instruments, instruction and facilities to young musicians.

Holding the proceedings together were Jimmy Vivino and the Basic Cable Band, whose regular gig is as Conan O'Brien's TV show band. They kicked it off with some up-tempo, horn-driven numbers, culminating in a rousing (and slightly sanitized) version of James Brown's "Sex Machine," sung by wild-man trumpeter Mark Pender.

Next up, Santa Barbara's guitar pickup guru/Notes for Notes patron saint Seymour Duncan and L.A.-based axeman Johnny Hawthorn came out for a sweet guitar jam. They were then joined by singer Shari Puorto for a great version of "Going Down," in a Jeff Beck Group-style arrangement.

The first big surprise came next, with the unbilled Alan Parsons performing "Sirius," "Eye in the Sky" and "Don't Answer Me." Parsons, who now calls Santa Barbara home, has been a generous supporter of local charities, including giving a benefit concert two years ago for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara at the same venue, a charity that has strong ties with Notes for Notes. Parsons' longtime guitarist — and another Santa Barbara local — Alastair Greenejoined in.

Then there was another big surprise — unbilled Eagles guitarist Don Felder graced the audience with a cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride and Joy" and one of the all-time great rock songs, "Hotel California," which Felder co-wrote. Hearing Felder's solo at the end of the latter song, which many like me can sing along to virtually note for note, was almost a religious experience.

And that was just the show before the intermission!

The second half of the concert kicked off with Robert Randolph, a bluesy lap steel guitar virtuoso who brought high energy and Bo Diddley into the mix — and the crowd to its feet. Who could possibly top that? One word: Slash.

Slash first rocked the musical universe as lead guitarist for Guns N' Roses, and he played with Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit, and is currently pursuing a solo career. He is recognized as one of rock music's all-time greatest guitarists, and if memory serves, almost single-handedly brought the Gibson Les Paul guitar back into vogue in the late 1980s. With his signature curly hair and black top hat, he was a commanding presence at the Lobero.

Slash was in a bluesy/funky mode, starting off with an acoustic duet cover of Robert Johnson's "Ramblin' On My Mind" with Vivino, then plugging in and giving his wah pedal a workout for a cover of The Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone."

The cool covers continued with Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." and Jimi Hendrix's slow blues "Red House," and climaxed with Sly and the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)."

During the latter, while the band kept the funky groove going, Slash's guitar was signed by the notable guitarists onstage and was auctioned off. When the bidding stalled around $5,500, Randolph decided to throw in his guitar as well, bringing the take for Notes for Notes up to $8,000. Well played!

This song also featured some fine soloing from 15-year-old Notes for Notes Hall of Fame inductee Chimaway Lopez.

Just when it seemed the evening was over, Slash wanted to do one more song, and the band launched into a smokin' cover of The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter." Special kudos go out to Puorto for belting out the background vocals made famous by Merry Clayton.

Another star of the evening was the remodeled Lobero Theatre, which looks and sounds absolutely great. The Notes for Notes Benefit Concert was the perfect way to show it off for the first time.

"Hermosa Beach-based blues-rock singer Shari Puorto and her excellent four-man band tore it up on a packed patio at the convention center. While several hundred attendees were enjoying BBQ chicken and burgers, Puorto dished up some original material from her latest album (the aptly-titled Real) as well as several earlier efforts. Highlights included the slow burner “Don’t Mess with Me” and a striking ballad, “Free.”

August - 2008 - Review "Down The Road" in issue 45 of Blues Matters!
Stuart A Hamilton, Blues Matters!
Well now! I suspected that this second album from Shari Puorto and her Rhythm Addicts might be a rare treat when I saw that the guitars were getting handled by the fantastic Blues player Alastair Greene. And that was before I noticed the name of the legendary Barry Goldberg plastered over production, songwriting and keys! You know, the one who for med The Electric Flag with Mike Bloomfield, who wrote songs for Rod Stewart, Gladys Knight, Joe Cocker, Steve Miller and Bobby "Blue" Bland. That's when he wasn't producing albums by Percy Sledge, Charlie Musselwhite and James Cotton. Or recording one of my all time favourite albums, "Blast From My Past". Add in the powerful voice of Shari , and you end up with an album that will probably end up on my list of favourites f or this year. It's not a perfect album as Shari is at her best when she's letting rip, which means the ballads like 'This Ain't That Kind Of Love Song' or 'I Thought I Knew (You Were The One)’ fall a little next to belters like 'Treat Me Mean', 'Outta Mind' and 'What's It Gonna Take'. As with any woman singing the Blues, Shari has had the Janis Joplin comparison thrown her way, but I get more of a souped up Bonnie Bramlett vibe, even a touch of Rossington Collins band styled southern rock. She lists Etta James, Susan Tedeschi, Pat Benatar and the Doobie Brothers amongst her influences, and it's a heady mix of soul and Blues that raises a smile and lifts the spirits. The bonis live track shows there's no studio trickery, and "Down The Road" is definitely a CD to track down and enjoy.

In my review of her last album, I said that she had a livelihood that if bottled, could be sold as a top notch energy drink. She still has that energy. She is possibly more energized this time out. Her name? Shari Puorto. She has just recorded and released a brand new album. This one has the title of Down The Road

May 2008 - Southland Blues Magazine Review "Down the Road"
Local vocals sensation Shari Puorto belts with full throttle and all-wheel drive on this latest program from her contemporary repertoire. For the powerful spirit in her voice and the heartfelt emotion that she lays down, she’s been compared favorably to Janis Joplin and a few other notable heroes of modern music; more here

August - 2008 - Review "Down The Road" in issue 45 of Blues Matters!
Stuart A Hamilton, Blues Matters!
.....the legendary Barry Goldberg plastered over production, songwriting and keys! More here
